Signs Your Fireplace Needs Repair

No matter what time of year it is, it’s always a good idea to make sure your fireplace is in good working order. After all, you never know when you might need to use it! We’ve made a list of 6 signs to look for in your fireplace to indicate if it needs repair.

Smoke in House:

Your fireplace should never be sending smoke into your home. If you notice any amount of smoke coming from the fireplace while it’s burning, it’s time to call in the professionals for a good cleaning!

Cracks:

Is your fireplace showing signs of wear and tear? If you notice cracks around the masonry of your fireplace, it’s best to call in a professional to fill them in. Though it can seem like a simple DIY, store-bought mortar applied incorrectly or sloppily can lead to further damage down the road.

Rusting:

Rusting anywhere within the fireplace indicates moisture that does not belong. Rust typically occurs in or around the chimney or the damper. Despite where the rust is found, you should get it repaired immediately. If left alone, the rust can spread and damage the fireplace, costing you more money in the long run.

White Stains:

If the bricks on the outside of your fireplace seem to have white staining that looks similar to chalk or flour, this indicates that there is moisture within the bricks. Get this looked at as soon as possible, as this weakens the bricks.

Smoke or Burning Smell:

Smoky or burning smells are signs of excess debris or dust. Consider getting the fireplace cleaned asap to ensure everything is working correctly and efficiently.

Rotten Egg Smell or Hissing:

Rotten egg smells, and hissing sounds are most likely signs of a gas leak which can be very dangerous. A gas leak can lead to a gas explosion. In this case, it’s best to call the fire department and get out of your home until the issue is resolved and cleared by professionals.
